(Azerbaijani Caucasian Rugs p.174.) Kerimov refers to this type of rug as “Gollu Chichi (so-called Zeikur), Kuba district, Kuba and dates the the dark colour constellation as typical for the period after 1900. Classical pieces of the 19th century have 2 to maximum 3 borders. The ornaments of this piece are closer to the earlier classical pieces. Characteristic are the representation of the Greek (St George’s cross) otherwise called diagonal bars and the ‘running dogs’ motif in the outer border which this example does not have. The dark blue central field shows elongated palmettes forming a cross, together with the large diagonal bars. In addition to the usual ornaments scattered over the whole field the three and four-legged birds/animals deserve noting. What the story/symbols of these animals -some with longer tails than others is - is difficult to interpret.
